Street-Porter, Janet

Street-Porter, Janet
   b. 1946
Television producer and executive Janet Street-Porter was educated at Lady Margaret Grammar School, Fulham, and the Architectural Association. After journalism on Petticoat and the Evening Standard, she emerged in the 1980s, as both presenter and executive, as one of the most prominent women in British television. Tall, bespectacled and strikingly dressed, with prominent teeth and uninhibited Estuary English, she revels in stirring controversy by forthrightness. Nine years at the BBC ended with acrimony; in her 1995 Edinburgh Festival lecture she described the Corporation as male, middleclass, middle-aged and mediocre. Winner of a BAFTA originality award (1988) and the Prix Italia (1993), and a Fellow of the Royal Television Society (1994), she has expressed another of her interests as president of the Ramblers’ Association.
